The anatomy of the clitoris

******

External parts of the clitoris

Less than one quarter of the clitoris can be seen externally. This is the glans clitoris, which people usually identify as just ‘the clitoris’. It varies in size from person to person. It is located above the urethra at the top of the vulva. Above the glans is the clitoral hood, which is the point where the labia minora meet. The hood protects the glans clitoris from unwanted friction.

Internal parts of the clitoris

The internal clitoris makes up the majority of the organ and is has three main areas – the body, the crura and the vestibular bulbs. The body extends from the glans, then separates into the two crura (or crus if singular), reaching down either side of the vestibular bulbs. These extend behind the labia minora.

The internal clitoris is made of erectile tissue that swells with blood during sexual arousal – its expansion can also cause pressure to the external wall of the vagina, which can contribute to pleasure during penetrative sex.
